The Decade You Thought Would Never Come Back In Style Is Now “In”

Above, designer Jeff Lincoln takes inspiration from James Bond movies of the 1980s for a client’s multi-million-dollar yacht, as featured in Architectural Digest.

Design aficionados who are in tune with the vintage and antiques market have long known that mid-century pieces are usually the ones to command high prices. While demand isn’t expected to subside anytime soon — so many designs from that period have transcended time to become classics — there’s another decade catching the interest of collectors at a fast pace. That decade? You might not believe it: The 1980s.

Though the fashion trends (body-con dresses, leggings, big glasses, jackets with strong shoulders, and New Wave hairstyles) have been revived for so long that many are out again, the furniture market moves at a much slower pace. Today, a new generation is finding fresh inspiration in everything from the Memphis Group’s boundary-pushing designs (on the high end) to the sort of chunky rattan furniture you’d see on The Golden Girls (on the lower end of the market), and prices are rising accordingly.

If you’re curious about expanding your décor horizons, take a look at a few of our favorite ’80s pieces currently for sale at Viyet…and maybe add some Duran Duran to your Spotify playlist.

Saporti 1980s Yonkers Suede Barrel Chairs

Why we love them: The strong silhouette has a sculptural feel that gives this set of chairs a definite presence in a room. While the emerald green upholstery is on-trend right now, the dotted pattern adds unexpected character.

Vintage 1980s Travertine and Glass Side Tables

Why we love them: Just like the above chairs, these side tables are another great example of the 1980s approach to shape (the stronger, the better). Travertine also ranks up there with chrome, brass, and glass as a classic material of the era that’s made a comeback. Here, the base of each table makes a bold impact — but it doesn’t distract, thanks to the neutral color of the travertine. If you love the look but need a larger piece, take a look at the similar 1980s Travertine Coffee Table.

Vintage Italian Bubble Glass Leaf Chandelier

Why we love it: Hesitant to accept the 1980s comeback? Think of it this way — a lot of the looks that were popular during the decade were reinterpretations of Art Deco motifs. If you love that period but haven’t had much luck finding authentic circa-1930s pieces, look for the ’80s updates. This handsome chandelier features a classic Art Deco leaf pattern, accented with warm brass (another finish that’s in again).

Pedro Coronel Vintage Red Dove Lithograph

Why we love it: This work by the celebrated Mexican artist may date to the 1980s, but the modern composition transcends time. We also love the use of color, from the intense hot pink to the burnt-orange background.

Vintage 1980s Italian Plexiglass Wall Sconces

Why we love them: The geometric shape of each sconce is made even bolder by the use of layered plexiglass — details that can be appreciated even during the daylight hours. At night, the light from the central bulb enhances the color and texture of each layer.
