As an Atlanta-based interior designer with an intuitive approach to design, Susan Ferrier is well-known for creating sensuous, wonderfully atmospheric interiors.
What inspired this career path for you?
The choices I make with my work are inspired, but this path is a life path for me. A calling and a compulsion. It is in my DNA like migratory flight patterns in birds. I cannot help myself.
What is your go-to source for inspiration?
Travel and learning about other cultures is like the oxygen in the air I breathe for this work. Great art direction and the use of light in movies.
Tell us about your creative process.
Really listening to whoever is sitting in front of me is the start. The visualization of a holistic concept and direction comes from that place, and the execution considers the architectural shell and becomes very holistic from that point.
Describe your style in 6 words or less.
Emotionally evocative, atmospheric, sensual, and responsive.
What’s a staple in your tool kit?
Powerful scale in gesture and intent. The use of lighting, drapery, and tone to create a cohesive push on boundaries.
Who do you look up to in the design world?
John Saladino, Anouska Hempel
If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?
An adventurer. Someone who “knows something” through travel and experience and risk taking. A person who walks the edge and tests limits on whatever path life takes him or her.
Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
“Excellence” or “Evocative”
Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?
The art direction and set design of Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer.
What do you love about Viyet?
The community it has established and brought together in the design world.
