Designer Profile: Michelle Williams

Mixing modern pieces with traditional designs, Michelle can move from Baroque to Herman Miller in a few short steps. With her broad scope of experience and open mind, clients always feel confident in Michelle’s effortless ability to carry out their vision with care.

What inspired this career path for you?
I didn’t find interior design, it found me. I couldn’t stop cutting out pictures from magazines, rearranging furniture, helping friends with their homes. I just didn’t know it was a career.

What is your go-to source for inspiration?
Nature and travel. I get inspired by seeing other cultures, hotels, fashion in other countries. Of course, nothing beats the colors of nature.

Tell us about your creative process.
I usually start with the space and let it just speak to me. Something will spark an idea or vision — whether it’s lighting or colors, and then I can just run with it.

Describe your style in 6 words or less.
Timeless and unique with an edge.

What’s a staple in your tool kit?
Tape measure.

Who do you look up to in the design world?
I admire artists. They have a talent and a vision that is truly their own. I was buying art before I ever could afford furniture.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?
I don’t know exactly why, but I would love to design a home for Drew Barrymore. She just seems smart and open. I like women who are creative, innovative, and business-like all at the same time.

Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day.” When doing things correctly, it is always  worth the wait. Whether you are waiting for custom furniture to arrive, or doing a home slowly because of budget restraints — have a plan in place and stick to it. Don’t just fill your house with easy, cheap stuff. You’ll regret it later.

Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?
I love Viyet, 1stDibs, Chairish for websites. I devour my favorite magazines when they arrive — like Elle Decor, Atlanta Homes, Architectural Digest, and House & Home from Canada.

What do you love about Viyet?
Viyet is special because it opens up a world of furniture, art, and accessories to everyone. You don’t need to be a designer or be working with a designer in order to access amazing finds. The art, accessories, and furniture really feel different and special, representing many styles.
