Christian Darnaud-Maroselli and Jean De Merry created their furniture line with a mission to marry old-world techniques with a new perspective. The result: a French deco-inspired collection of lighting, case goods, seating, and decorative art pieces that showcase rich materials (think: luxe shagreen, delicate parchment, burnished bronze) for a look that’s fresh, sleek, unexpected, and rooted in quality and craftsmanship.
What inspired this career path for you?
The discovery of Eileen Gray’s work. I love her lacquer period and the quality of her design. That was a blast in my life.
What is your go-to source for inspiration?
Just before starting the company, I was writing novels published in France. It may be strange, but my process is the same for creating a character in a novel as it is adding new lighting to a home: I close my eyes and I can see what the character is doing, like in a movie, and likewise, how the lighting will be on a wall and what will be special about it. My only problem is sometimes I get too creative.
Describe your style in 6 words or less.
As eclectic as it can be, the only motto is: quality.
Who do you look up to in the design world?
I look up to people who are constantly reinventing themselves.
What do you love about Viyet?
The fact that our products will be accessible to all sorts of clientele worldwide, rather than being exclusive in a showroom.
