What inspired this career path for you?
We’ve always been firm believers in trusting your instincts and following opportunities. Mat is actually an actor-turned-writer-turned-design editor-turned designer. Brandon began as an architect. We never saw ourselves running our own coast-to-coast interior design firm and shop, but always followed our passion and jumped at interesting opportunities we felt would be fulfilling.
What is your go-to source for inspiration?
It’s a mix. From Instagram and Pinterest to flea markets and new travel destinations. Inspiration can be found everywhere if you just stop and look for it.
Tell us about your creative process.
Design is all about getting inside a client’s head. We love the process of getting to know them and identifying their signature style. Once we feel like we have it on lock, we set the visual pace and embark on the process of laying out their home and pitching them physical key products. We always reserve the right to play and experiment with certain moments and accessories. Client’s hire us because they love our vision, so it’s fun to leave some surprises (within reason!) for the final install. The reveal is always the best part!
Describe your style in 6 words or less.
Classic, timeless, playful, and cutting-edge.
What’s a staple in your tool kit?
A brass measuring tape to answer our favorite question: will it fit?
Who do you look up to in the design world?
I love Barclay Butera, both for owning a signature style and being smart about scaling his business. Martyn Lawrence Bullard lets his imagination run wild, and his projects are always so wonderfully varied, you can tell he really has fun with his clients. And Jamie Bush…well, that guy just does the sickest design!
If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?
We’ve always wanted to do a room in electric colors. Neon pink, yves klein blue, chartreuse. Maybe a kids room or something fab in Miami.
Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
Designing like it’s an emergency. Everyone in the business knows that no matter how much planning goes into the process, there never seems like there are enough hours in the day!
Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?
We’re huge fans of Pinterest and we’ve recently become obsessed with the Live Auctioneers app. You preview auctions, save items, receive alerts when the lot is up, and bid in real time.
What do you love about Viyet?
We love Viyet for their innovation in the marketplace. Client budgets are one of the toughest pain points in any project, and Viyet allows us to quickly and easily find the perfect piece for each of our clients’ needs. Also, as the owners of two brick-and-mortar locations, the consignment platform allows us to sell custom pieces off the showroom floor.
