If we had to pick a trend that’s defined the past couple years, it wouldn’t necessarily be the rise of rose gold or the craze for copper and brass fixtures. Instead, it would be minimalism. Not necessarily as an architectural style, but as a lifestyle. Perhaps it’s the continued success of Marie Kondo’s best-selling The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, or how clever design has made tiny homes cool, but the advice of “less is more” couldn’t be more true. Right now is the best time to get in on the trend, with the summer-to-fall wardrobe changeover having us look a little closer at our closets, and the upcoming entertaining season bringing us a new focus on the state of our homes before guests arrive. As the first installment of our “Holiday Head Start” series, we’re focusing on the art of decluttering.
Start with a plan.
If you’ve already streamlined your belongings, it’s far easier to tackle the rooms in your home one at a time, instead of multitasking. If you’re already focusing on your wardrobe, work your way from the closet to the bedroom, then focus on the next space. Others might want to start in the public spaces (living room, kitchen, dining room) before heading into more private rooms.Declutter by category.
This tip is borrowed from the KonMari method made famous by Marie Kondo. She recommends clients addressing the items in their homes by category, in a specific order
: clothing, books, papers, komono, and sentimental items. No matter which order you’d prefer to go in, always make sure to address sentimental items last (which can take a little more time than sorting through your clothes).
Decide what to keep, rather than “give away.” Of course, as you declutter, you’ll naturally come across items that you plan on donating. But for the more difficult moments where you realize that you own more scarves than you can wear, make the decision based on what brings you the most joy. Yes, it’s another KonMari tip, but one that works.

Keep surfaces clear. Once you’ve cut down on the stuff you don’t need, your next challenge is in keeping your interiors free of clutter. The easiest way is to keep all tables, counters, and other surfaces clear — this even means stowing the Vitamix in a cabinet when it’s not in use, and resisting the urge to leave your purse on the console in the entryway.
