With her focus on her clients and what they want in their space, designer Angela Free truly creates a one-of-a-kind space that centers around their tastes. With a history in fashion, she looks up to icons like Chanel and Yves St. Laurent for inspiration with their unparalleled craftsmanship and richness of materials to incorporate into each space she creates.
Viyet: What inspired this career path for you?
Angela: Many international personal moves in very diverse settings and a strong personal desire to create warm and thoughtful homes in each place, exposure to different cultures and ways of living, love of architecture, art, and materials; plus, a love of quality and gorgeous objects, along with a fashion heritage.
Viyet: What is your go-to source for inspiration?
Angela: My sources for inspiration would have to be creative musing, travel, design books, as well as pinning on Pinterest.
Viyet: Tell us about your creative process.
Angela: I have a respect for architecture, so I always consider that first. It is always all about the client – the client guides the way, it’s not about me.
My style in six words or less: Bold luxury, tailored perfection, and global streak
Viyet: What’s a staple in your tool kit?
Angela: A mix of materials first and foremost – fabric, leather, stone, wood, metal. A dressmaker’s detail and crisp tailoring.
Viyet: Who do you look up to in the design world?
Angela: The all-time greats – Jean-Michel Frank, Frances Elkins, Julia Morgan, Billy Baldwin, and Coco Chanel.
Viyet: If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?
Angela: An open-minded eclectic traveler with a diverse and bold sensitivity; an individual who is inspired by objects, art, textiles, pattern, color, texture, and materials.
Viyet: Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
Angela: Coco Chanel once noted, “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is no luxury.”
