Jan Showers is a living example of the phrase, “Like mother, like daughter.” “She knew how to do everything the right way,” she says, commenting on her mother’s “incredible eye and ability to put a room or house together.” Surrounded by such beauty, Jan had constant inspiration — which may have informed her exquisite sense of design. A recognized authority on elegant style, the award-winning designer is known for her eponymous design firm, antiques business, and two books, Glamorous Rooms and Glamorous Retreats. Her designs have a sophisticated yet livable quality resulting from combining a variety of periods and styles.
Jan finds inspiration in art, travel, fashion, fine antiques and objects, as well as nature. “When I am at my country home, I am really able to clear my mind and come up with so many ideas on a variety of things,” she says. Traveling to Europe on buying trips for her showroom leaves her inspired by all of the antiques she sees. “The Italians especially have great taste — their pieces have amazing craftsmanship,” she says.
Six words that describe my style: Classic. Comfortable. Understated Glamour. Timeless. Refined.
The Jan Showers Collection recently celebrated its 15th Anniversary. Jan has built her custom furniture business on the principal that her clients should, first and foremost, look and feel great in their own rooms. “Our furniture is crafted with the highest quality materials and handcrafted in the USA,” she says. The finishes are hand applied and can require as many as 10 steps. Jan’s favorite part of the furniture design process is seeing the product come to life. “There is nothing like going through the process of creating a new piece and seeing the final product come to fruition,” she says. “Even though we do this every year, that feeling never gets old.”
