The dynamic collaboration of Jason and Katie Maine has created a fresh design aesthetic and ethos since Maine Design’s launch in 2007. The husband-and-wife duo have both had a keen interest for design from a young age, fostering a passion for interiors that is expressed through their work. Maine Design’s interiors combine all the right elements for an elegant and pragmatic home, while always remaining unique in their details, which influence the overall space. Fashion is one of their primary sources when designing an interior, whether it is a curtain pleat seen in a killer skirt or an “off” color with the right amount of dusty undertone from a fashion show. For the richest simplicity and best array of tones, Maine Design prefers Holland & Sherry Fabrics above all else.

“Our first step in the creative process is understanding the project and the client — who they are, how they want to use the space. Are there kids, dogs, parties, etc. Understanding the work and the audience creates the context of the project. From that point on, we spend a lot of time trying to make the space look effortless.”

Soulful, clean, relevant, and livable.

One of Maine Design’s striking projects is a home in Bel Air made for a modern art enthusiast. Creating a relationship between the existing art and the designed interior was the paramount objective for the team, hoping to strike the perfect complementing balance without one standing out more than the other. As Maine Design tells it, “[Our] biggest challenge was to make the spaces approachable, because the art is so incredible and the scale of the rooms are quite grand. We tried to cluster smaller seating areas, especially in the living room, to create more intimate spaces. We also juxtaposed antiques with cleaner upholstery shapes — covering everything in monochromatic fabrics that had a lot of richness and depth.”
